How to calculate your Life Path number

Your Life Path is the most important number in numerology β€” and the easiest to work out. Here's the method, step by step, with worked examples.

Your Life Path number comes from one thing only: your full date of birth. It describes the overarching theme of your life β€” the road you're here to walk. Calculating it takes about a minute, and once you've done it by hand, the whole of numerology makes more sense.

The method, in three steps

  • ✦Write your birth date out in full: day, month and year.
  • ✦Add together every single digit.
  • ✦Reduce the total to a single digit by adding its digits again β€” but stop if you reach 11, 22 or 33.
The golden rule: keep reducing until you reach a number from 1 to 9 β€” unless the total is 11, 22 or 33, which are master numbers and stay as they are.

Worked example 1 β€” a single digit

Take a birthday of 14 February 1990 β†’ 1 + 4 + 0 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 26. That's two digits, so reduce again: 2 + 6 = 8. This person is a Life Path 8 β€” the powerhouse.

Worked example 2 β€” a master number

Take 30 June 1986 β†’ 3 + 0 + 0 + 6 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 6 = 33. Thirty-three is a master number, so we don't reduce it away β€” we keep it, noting the 6 beneath. This person is a Life Path 33/6 β€” the master teacher. Reduce too eagerly and you'd miss it entirely, which is exactly why the method you use matters.

A note on method

You may see another approach that reduces the day, month and year separately before adding them. The arithmetic usually agrees β€” but not always: separate reduction can quietly erase a master number. We deliberately add every digit and reduce once at the end, so that if you carry an 11, 22 or 33, you actually see it. It's the more revealing of the two valid methods, and it's the one our calculator uses.

What your number means

Once you have your single figure (or master number), read its meaning β€” each Life Path is a distinct character, from the pioneering 1 to the master teacher 33. And remember the Life Path is only the headline: your name produces several more numbers that fill in the detail.

Frequently asked

Do I reduce the year first, or add everything together?

There are two schools. We use the 'add every digit' method and reduce once at the end, which preserves master numbers that would otherwise be lost β€” so 30/06/1986 reads as 33/6, not just 6. Some practitioners reduce day, month and year separately first; this can hide a master number. We prefer the master-surfacing approach so you can see if you carry one.

What if my total is 11, 22 or 33?

Stop there β€” don't reduce it. These are master numbers and are read in their elevated form (often written 11/2, 22/4, 33/6 to show the single digit beneath).

Does my birth time or place matter?

No. Unlike astrology, the Life Path uses only your calendar date of birth β€” day, month and year. Time and place aren't used.

Which date if I was born near midnight or a time-zone line?

Use the calendar date recorded on your birth certificate. That's the date numerology treats as yours.
