A skeletal figure in black armour rides a white horse, bearing a banner of the white mystic rose. Kings fall and children look up as he passes; a sun rises between two towers behind him. Death is rarely literal — it is transformation, ending and rebirth.
Death — upright meaning
Something ends so something can be born. Death is the card of transformation, endings and profound renewal — almost never a literal death, but the close of a chapter that has run its course. A part of your life, an identity or a situation is being asked to fall away so that something truer can rise in its place. Resisting only prolongs the pain. Release the old self with grace, let the ending complete itself, and welcome the rebirth waiting on the other side.
Death — reversed meaning
Reversed, Death points to resistance to change — clinging to what is clearly over, fearing an inevitable ending, or stalling a necessary transformation. You may be stuck in limbo, unable to let go, which keeps the new life from arriving. It can also signal slow, stagnant change. Identify what you're holding onto past its time, grieve it honestly, and allow the transition to finish so renewal can begin.
In love
A relationship transforms or ends to make way for something more honest. For couples, the shedding of an old dynamic; for singles, closing a past chapter so new love can enter. Endings here are clearings.
In work & money
The end of a role, project or phase, and the start of a new direction. Though it can feel like loss, it clears space for growth. Don't cling to what's finished — let the transformation carry you onward.
